You’ve already taken the first step in deciding you think therapy is right for you, and that can be a difficult decision to come to. Now it’s about finding the right therapist for you, building a strong therapeutic relationship with your therapist is a key part to successful therapy; as it is imperative that you feel comfortable, free from judgement, wholly accepted and trust the person you choose to support you in your therapeutic journey.
Generally you can start by sending an email enquiry to gather any information you may need, before deciding if you think they are the right therapist for you. This can help with choosing the right therapist before you meet to start your first session.
Once you’ve chosen a therapist to work with, you can arrange an appointment at a mutually convenient time and begin your therapeutic journey.
Getting started
Starting therapy... our first session will be an exploratory session where you can tell me what’s brought you to therapy and any goals you may have, quite often clients don’t always have the answers yet and that’s OK, we can work together to explore things. If you feel happy to proceed we will establish an agreement of how we will work together which will include things like frequency of sessions, when we will meet and confidentiality. I offer weekly or fortnightly appointments, these are generally at the same time and day of the week unless flexible appointments are required.
We will also discuss therapeutic goals to work towards, these may be managing stress and anxiety, or it could be processing the past and understanding how it can impact on the present and future, it may be maintaining relationships or implementing boundaries... whatever they may be, we can explore this together if you’re unsure.
Whether you feel you need short or long term therapy we can discuss this to establish what will be most beneficial to you. Therapy works best when undertaken regularly, so I would recommend meeting weekly, however this can be discussed to suit your needs. If you are happy to proceed, we will work towards an initial 6 sessions. Towards the end of those sessions we will have a review to explore how you are finding therapy, anything you find helpful or unhelpful, if you feel we are sufficiently focused on your goals or require more direction, and if you feel you want to continue with further sessions or work towards an ending.
You may be wondering what to expect next...
Ongoing sessions will be led by you, your thoughts, feelings or presenting issues. Exploring them and their impact on you and your current circumstances to gain insight and understanding, as well as having the space and support to process anything that may have previously been locked away in the sub-conscience.
