I think it's important to be able to validate a person's feeling around loss, regardless to whether it's a human or pet bereavement. Sadly, pet loss can be isolating because not everyone understands the unique bond a person has with their animal, and so can be dismissive.
Whilst many of us would want to be able to have choice, in our loved ones ending their suffering when terminally ill. It's a decision we struggle to make when it's for our pets. Not knowing what the right decision is or when's the right time to make it. Sometimes it's with the advice of the vet, but sadly this is also sometimes affected by financial decisions people are forced to make, which then brings feelings such as guilt.
Losing a much loved pet is losing a member of your family. Quite often they bring you love and comfort you may not receive elsewhere, as well as company, routine and a sense of purpose.
Seeking support from family and friends can help, but not everyone will understand your grief. Speaking with the blue cross bereavement support or a trained counsellor who will be able to adequately support you through your thoughts and feelings to process your grief.
